Humanitarian Service Day‏

Sisters, I just wanted to remind you of some of the things we discussed in our RS meeting on Sunday.Our Ward has been asked to put together 20 school kits for the Humanitarian Service Day Saturday July 31st (9:00 am- 2:00pm)

The following are the items we need to collect before this day to put together each school kit:

4 unsharpened pencils
1 rubber pencil eraser approx (1”x 2”)
1 blunt nose scissors with metal blades
1 pencil sharpener
Glue or spiral notebooks (lined sheets 8 x 10 ½ or 8 ½ x 11 inches) Notebooks should total approximately 450 sheets, no more than 6 notebooks)
1 set colored pencils (At least 12 per set, approximately 7 inches long)

If you would like Sister Carico to purchase the items for the kit for you, please call her at 832-212-4305 to make arragments to get the money to her. It is about $10.50/kit. We would like to start collecting these items ASAP.

Requested items will go inside bags. We need 1 1/2 yards heavier weight material such as denim, upholstery) to make the bags.

Please let me know if you have any questions. What a great opportunity to put these kits together and help Children around the World!

Quilts

Hi Sisters, The stake has requested that we donate 4-6 quilts to the quilt-a-thon they have in September/October. One quilt is finished. We have 3 tops finished. Sister Livesay is finishing up some blocks for the final quilt. We have the back for one of them so that leaves us with the 3 tops that need backs that I mentioned on Sunday. If you have the amount of fabric and or can donate the 100% cotton fabric for this project please let us know or bring it to Relief Society on Sunday.

These are the measurements:

1. Green 'Log Cabin' 74x94 5 1/2 yards Needs to have a green print back; any color green will work since we are using every green on the front.

2. Black and Multi color 'Log Cabin' small 66" X 92" 5 1/8 yards of any color - not black or pink or yellow or purple. We are trying to make it appropriate for any child and not real pale so it won't show dirt. Prints also work better than solids. Would prefer not to have the back black since it is hard to work on.

3.Black and Multi color 'Log Cabin' large 80" X 104" 6 yards same color parameters as #2

We really appreciate your desire to help. These quilts will bless and keep warm the lives of those who need them the most.

New Books for the year are July 9th: The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

July 8th: Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers

This is a delightful book. I was looking for an inspirational, thoughtful, and easy to read book, and I found it. The book tells the story of the mother who is a single mom and an obstetrician, and the daughter, Claire, who is a young high school student. They rarely connect in person and instead heavily rely on notes on the refrigerator to communicate to each other. The notes unfold a journey that the mother and daughter go through. We see their struggles and their joys through the refrigerator.

Tonight (Thursday June 11th) we have our Book Club meeting. It will be at 7pm at Kendra Gladwill's home. We have been asked to change the direction we are taking in our book selections so we will be voting again from an approved book list tonight. Please come and help us pick some new books. We will be discussing The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. If you haven't read the book, come anyways and we will just have a fun time hanging out!

Bowtie Chicken Salad/ Book Change

Hello Sisters! Many people have requested Sister Bradshaw's recipe for Bowtie Chicken Salad that was served at the retreat. Here it is.

5-7 Chicken Breasts- Cooked (depending on size and personal preference)

12 oz. Bowtie pasta or your favorite

1 Bunch chopped green onions

1 Cup Diced Celery

2-4 Diced Apples- dipped in pineapple juice (depending on size and personal preference)

20 oz Pineapple tidbits (drained)

1 Cup Mayonnaise

1 Cup Creamy Caesar Salad Dressing (or your favorite)

For Best results mix all ingredients together just before serving. Enjoy!!

Turning Pages Book Club!

On Thursday our Book Club met for the first time to discuss "A Girl Named Zippy" By Haven Kimmel. We had a great time talking about this fun book and we were able to take a vote on the rest of the books that we will be reading this year. I will put a list on the left so you can check out what books are coming up any time! Check out the list of books we'll be reading and join us whenever you can, you can even come when you haven't read the book we still have fun visiting. So far all of the scheduled meetings are going to be at Kendra Gladwill's home at 7pm and for the most part they are scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Quilting Tutorial

Hello Sisters! As many of you know we are working on some quilts to turn in for the stake charity quilt day. Sister Stone has been working very hard to teach us all how to make these beautiful quilts. We are working on a version of a log cabin quilt. The squares are very simple to make, but we need a lot of them! If anyone is able to take some scrap fabric home and work on some squares, please let Sister Stone know. She has put a tutorial up on her blog if you would like to see how they are made or you can come to one of the quilting days or nights at her house.

Women's Retreat- More Fit for the Kingdom

Ok so it's not exactly enrichment but I thought that the Women's Retreat was definitely worth blogging about. This weekend about 25 of us Relief Society Sisters went over to Camp Edgewood in DeQuincy Louisiana. We had a wonderful time and were spiritually uplifted by the things we learned while there.
After a short program and dinner Friday night we were able to spend some time around a camp fire roasting marshmallows and Starbursts (this was new to me too).

Friday night after the program, we played a few games. One of them was Hollywood squares. Here is the panel of "Squares". It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot of trivia about Relief Society.
Part of the program Friday night was a presentation called "My Name is Sarah". It was beautifully done and very inspirational. We learned that no matter the circumstances in our lives we are never alone.

The theme of the Retreat was "More Fit for the Kingdom" On Saturday we learned many ways to become Fit. Heidi Serage taught us how to be Physically Fit in any Circumstances and gave us all an action plan to help us on our way to being more fit! We even had a short workout around the building in between presentations.

Bishop Hold talked to us about "Being Financially Fit Brings Peace". We learned that when we are Free from Debt WE are free, and to "Joyfully live within our means" so that "We can be ready for the rainy days WHEN they come".
Jackie Holt taught us about making our "Eternal Relationships Fit". We learned more about what it means to have a responsibility to love and care for one another and how we can do those things better. She also talked about how when we make choices to do something good we can either honor them or betray them. When we betray our choices to do something good we betray ourselves and 1. inflate the faults of others 2. Inflate our own virtue 3. inflate the value of things that justify our self betrayal and we 4. Blame

I didn't snap a picture of Sister Kathy Robinson because I was so busy taking notes on her excellent lesson about "How to be Spiritually Fit in these the Last Days". Sister Robinson came out to be with us from the Silverlake Ward and gave us a great list of things we can work on to become more Spiritually fit 1. Prayer 2. Scripture Study 3. Temple Worship 4. Sacrament meeting Worship 5. Keep the Commandments and Repentance 6. Fasting 7. A Remembrance Journal- to remember the blessings of the Lord in our lives 8. Service 9. Worthy Music/other media 10. Seek to be led by the Holy Ghost.

All of these presentations were wonderful and I feel like I am ready to become more fit in every way for the blessings of the kingdom.
It was a wonderful weekend, we played many great games and shared some wonderful spiritual experiences. Thank you to the Relief Society for putting together such a great outing for us all and for allowing us time to relax together and to become unified as a relief society and ward.

11. Still owns/ wears some of her 8th grade wardrobe- She would like me to make a disclaimer that she did not offer up this information and she only has a few sweatshirts and some pj's she made

12. Youth nickname was Razor Blazer- this one is not a Sister that should be a good hint

13. Still hold swimming records at her high school

14. Is obsessed with Tap Dancing

15. She's a twin!

16. Won a beauty pageant in High school and enjoyed playing Volleyball

17. Career goal of being a race car driver

18. Baptized 1 1/2 times ( Her mom was pregnant with her when she was baptized)

19. Loves life, good food, critters and flowering plants

20. Is a visionary stylist

21. She enjoys playing the flute and is an excellent musician

22. Performed with her college band in the NYC Macy's Thanksgiving parade

23. Enjoys planning and attending parties, a lot!

Quilting Day!

On Friday April 3rd, we had a quilting day at Sister Stone's house. We learned how to use a sewing machine (something some of us were novice's at) and were able to put together a few squares for the quilts we are making for the Stake quilting day service project. We had a fun time learning from Sister Stone and she has put a lot of work into this project! The Relief Society still has work to do on these quilts and we will be making more quilting days/evenings available so please come and learn to sew and help us complete this wonderful project!
